At what age is best to become a foreign exchange student?

That sounds like a good time. You need to be flexible and adaptable. The girl I stayed with probably needed mental help, and I stuck it out instead of moving. In spite of her, it was one of the best experiences of my life.

I say the summer you turn 16. That way you have a better understanding on how the world works.

That’s funny how someone said the summer you turn 16. I celebrated my 16th birthday in Salamanca, Spain living with a host family. Did two weeks of school at the university there.
It was a good time. I kind of wish I would have waited a year, but my favorite teacher was going on the trip that year, so I thought I’d go. I found out a lot about myself and it changed my life!
Personally I think the summer after you graduate is a little late.

Actually, you have a couple of options. You might consider your senior year, if you can work it out with your school so you graduate on time. And, even if you don’t, you are young and could go an extra semester. (I turned 17 3 weeks before HS graduation myself.)
Also, a couple of exchange organizations, YFU being the best one I’m aware of for this, offers 13th Year programs for several countries, notably Germany. You’d attend a gymnasium — high level German High School.
If you do opt for the senior year, check out not only YFU, but also AFS and Rotary Exchange. Those are the three premier organizations. You’d probably have to apply soon, especially for Rotary.
